Army Detains Soldier for Allegedly Shooting 2 Residents in Borno Community

A Nigerian Army soldier has been detained after allegedly opening fire indiscriminately and injuring two civilians in Pulka town, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 5:10 p.m. on June 23, 2026.

According to the sources, the soldier, identified as Private Lawan Abubakar of the 82 Division Task Force Battalion deployed in Ngoshe, allegedly abandoned his duty post without authorization and proceeded to Pulka town.

The sources said the soldier reportedly discharged several rounds of ammunition indiscriminately around the Pulka Market area, resulting in injuries to two civilians.

Troops of the 192 Battalion swiftly responded to the situation, disarmed the soldier, and took him into custody to prevent further harm.

 

The injured victims were immediately evacuated to the General Hospital in Gwoza, where they are currently receiving medical attention.

 

Military sources further disclosed that the soldier has since been transferred to the Headquarters of the 26 Task Force Brigade for comprehensive investigation and possible disciplinary action in accordance with military regulations.

 

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
