Gunmen Ambush Military Checkpoint in Plateau, Kill Soldier, Steal Arms

Gunmen have attacked a military checkpoint in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing a soldier and carting away two firearms belonging to troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP).

The attack occurred at about 8 p.m. on Saturday at Sopp Checkpoint, Ungwan Boka, where troops were reportedly on security duty when the assailants launched a coordinated assault from different directions.

Security sources disclosed that the sudden attack triggered a gun battle between the troops and the gunmen, who eventually fled into nearby bushes after the exchange of fire.

Confirming the incident, the spokesman for Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, described the assault as deliberate and unprovoked.

Oteh said troops had restored normalcy in the affected area and commenced an aggressive pursuit of the attackers to ensure their arrest and the recovery of the stolen weapons.

“It was a deliberate and unprovoked attack on troops at Sopp Checkpoint, Ungwan Boka, in Riyom Local Government Area.
“Troops have restored normalcy in the area and are maintaining aggressive pursuit of the perpetrators in order to apprehend them and recover the carted-away weapons,” he said.
The military spokesman added that the security situation remained under control, noting that troops had heightened vigilance to prevent further security breaches and reassure residents of their safety.
He urged residents to remain calm, continue their lawful activities and provide security agencies with credible information that could support ongoing operations and efforts to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
