Terrorists overrun military base

Seven Soldiers Feared Killed as B’Haram Attacks Military Base in Borno

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have attacked a military post in Mairari community, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State, with reports indicating possible casualties among troops.

The attack reportedly occurred around 1 a.m. on Wednesday and lasted for more than two hours, according to local sources.

However, reports that seven soldiers were killed remain unverified, as no official casualty figures had been released as of Thursday.

The Chairman of Guzamala Local Government Area, Umar Sheriff, confirmed the incident in an interview with The PUNCH, saying the attack specifically targeted the military formation and resulted in no reported civilian casualties.

“The incident occurred this morning around 1 a.m. Though I don’t have statistics regarding the casualties yet, because it’s not everything we are told. It’s a security matter. But I know that no civilian was killed,” Sheriff said.

He described the assault as unusually intense, noting that the community had not experienced an attack of such magnitude in recent times.

“They have never attacked as much as this time, but thank God, the military were able to repel them,” he added.

The council chairman said the situation had returned to calm and disclosed plans to visit the community on Thursday to assess the situation firsthand.

Meanwhile, local sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said the attack may have resulted in casualties on both sides, although they could not independently verify the figures.

One of the sources said there were reports of military casualties, including an unconfirmed rumour that seven soldiers had been killed.

Another source said the intensity of the gunfire had heightened tension across the community, suggesting that the attackers might also have suffered casualties during the confrontation.

The source added that local forces and military personnel stood their ground during the attack.

Efforts to obtain an official military response were unsuccessful, as calls to the Acting Military Information Officer of the North-East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Mohammed Goni, were neither answered nor returned as of the time of filing this report.

The reported death toll therefore remains unconfirmed, while further details on the extent of casualties and damage to the military facility are awaited.
