Between Army and Police: ‘No Gree for Anybody’ and Matters Arising

Recently, the Nigerian Police Force, NPF, has proscribed the use of a slogan, ‘No Gree for Anybody’ among the citizens- thereby citing its tendency to constitute public disorder as the reason behind the motive.

Meanwhile , the phrase which emerged as a simple new year slogan, born out of discontent and a yearning for change, has since become a focal point of controversy, sparking a modicum clash between two Nigeria’s Security institutions- the Army and Police, in particular.

There is no doubt that the origins of the controversy lie in the discontent and desire for change that “No Gree for Anybody” encapsulates. Since then, the phrase has found resonance not only on the streets but also in the hearts of Nigerians who are grappling with various societal issues.

The Nigerian Police Force, tasked with maintaining law and order, has voiced concerns about the potential revolutionary undertones of the slogan. In their apprehension, they call for a halt to its usage, fearing that it might become a catalyst for widespread upheaval in the future.

Contrary to their view, the Nigerian Army on the other hand viewed the slogan not as a threat but as a potent tool for change. Their proposition involves a strategic redirection — a reinterpretation of “No Gree for Anybody” to be wielded against criminal activities plaguing the nation, such as banditry and kidnapping.

Whereas from the Freedom of Expression and National Narrative, This clash brings to light fundamental questions about freedom of expression, the power of language, and the role of slogans in shaping the national narrative.

However, prior to banning its public usage, issues that the police need to get clarification about “No Gree for Anybody” included questions like; is it a simple slogan emphasizing for change, or does it possess the potential to ignite a revolution? Can it transcend mere words and be harnessed as a unifying force against societal ills?

Nigeria, known for its vibrant diversity and passionate spirit, stands at a crossroads. The nation grapples with the multifaceted nature of “No Gree for Anybody,” torn between the desire for a collective voice against societal ills and the cautionary stance of those entrusted with maintaining law and order.

Delving into the heart of the linguistic dispute, it becomes evident that “No Gree for Anybody” has transcended its linguistic simplicity. It has become a statement echoing through the corridors of power, resonating on city streets, and reverberating across rural landscapes.

The clash between the Police Force and the Army underscores the nuanced intersection of expression, dissent, and the quest for a better Nigeria. While the Police Force views the slogan with caution, the Army see it as a potential force for positive change.

As the debate intensifies, everybody is expected to contribute his own share to the discourse on the future of a nation that boldly declares, “No Gree for Anybody.”

The linguistic dispute illuminates the potential impact of a seemingly simple slogan on the nation’s destiny, bringing to the forefront the underlying tensions and aspirations that define contemporary Nigeria.

There should be a call for suggestible solution rather than advocating for the outright abolition of the slogan, a middle ground can be sought. Strategic explanations and a concerted effort to redefine the narrative may offer a compromise.

By acknowledging the genuine concerns of the Police Force and harnessing the Armed Forces perspective for a collective fight against criminal elements, a harmonious coexistence of “No Gree for Anybody” in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape can be achieved.

In the long run, the Army and Police ought to remember that they are always partners in progress of ensuring security mandates of the nation, thus, should always work in synergy.
