Gov’t, stakeholders should revitalize public schools – NUC boss

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Rasheed, has stressed the need to revitalise public schools in the country because it caters for the greater number of pupils.

According to him, there is an urgent need for stakeholders to come together and join the government to address the crisis facing primary school education, especially in public schools.

He stated this in his speech at the 100 years celebration of LEA Primary School Makarfi Central established in 1922 with 14 pupils organised by the Old Boys Association in Kaduna.

He said the future of Nigeria’s education lies in the quality of primary school education, especially public schools.

The NUC boss, however, said that he was not underrating the contributions of private schools to the development of education in Nigeria as they were filling gaps in the provision of education at all levels.

He said the association of old pupils was very crucial in any rescue efforts to revive schools such as 100 year old Makarfi Central Primary School.

In his remarks, a former governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi who was also an old student of the school said employing good teachers and provision of learning materials would improve learning in public schools.

Finance committee chairman, Lawal Umaru Meyere assured the gathering that the Old Boys Association will do its best to support the alma mater.
