2019 Election: Niger FRSC to assist police in maintaining peace
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday said that it will assist the police in maintaining peace, law and order before, during and after the general elections in Niger.
The Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Mr Joel Dagwa, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on the sideline of a one-day capacity building workshop on election duties organised for the FRSC personnel.
Dagwa said that the role and responsibility of the organisation in the elections would come under the Inter-Agency Consultative Forum on Election Matters.
He said that the command would discharge other duties assigned to it by the constitution to assist the police to ensure that the elections were free, fair and credible.
He said, ‘‘We have been called upon to support the Nigeria Police in discharging their constitutional role.
‘‘This workshop will help us to remember our role and responsibilities in the 2019 general elections,’’ Dagwa said.

He said that the organisation was mandated to ensure safety on the roads during the elections.
He said that the FRSC would also ensure road worthiness of vehicles hired by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to move materials and personnel during the polls.
‘‘We are going to make sure that those vehicles that would be used for elections are road worthy.
“In fact, we have commenced inspection of the vehicles,’’ the sector commander said.
Also, Prof. Samuel Egwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, said that the commission’s N249 billion budget for the elections would spur it to ensure credible elections for the country.
‘‘The robust budget will ensure credible elections that will meet regional and global standards, which Nigeria has also signed,’’ he said.
Egwu said that the role and responsibility of the FRSC during the elections were under the third schedule of the 1999 constitution and included conducting, organising and supervising elections.
He appealed to the people of the state to be law abiding and shun acts of violence during the polls.
