Troops Nab Five Suspected Illegal Miners, Recover Explosives in Nasarawa
Troops of the 177 Guards Battalion have arrested five suspected illegal miners and recovered explosives as well as other mining equipment during a security operation in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The suspects were apprehended on June 1 during a long-range patrol conducted by troops operating from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Tattara and Patrol Base Zango under Operation MESA.
Security sources disclosed that the operation targeted an illegal mining site located in Tattara community, where the suspects were allegedly engaged in unauthorized mining activities.
Items recovered from the site included seven explosive devices, a detonating cord, detonators, a pumping machine, a generator and three motorcycles.
According to the sources, the recovered explosives and equipment were believed to have been used in mining operations at the location.

The suspects were arrested at the site and are currently in military custody alongside the recovered exhibits pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
Military authorities said the operation forms part of broader efforts to curb illegal mining activities, which continue to pose significant security, environmental and economic challenges to host communities and the nation.
They noted that the use of explosives in unauthorized mining operations raises additional security concerns and underscores the need for sustained enforcement actions against illegal operators.
The authorities reaffirmed the military’s commitment to supporting government efforts to sanitise the mining sector, protect national mineral resources and prevent their unlawful exploitation.
Investigations are ongoing, while the suspects are expected to be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action upon the conclusion of preliminary inquiries.
