NCTC Dismisses Fears Over Lakurawa Terrorist Group’s Threat

The National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) has downplayed the threat posed by a new terrorist group allegedly operating in Sokoto and Kebbi States, calling its numerical strength “insignificant.” Major General Adamu Laka, the NCTC’s National Coordinator, reassured the public that the group, referred to as *Lakurawa*, consists of no more than 150-200 individuals and is not as threatening as reported.

Laka emphasized the importance of avoiding the spread of fear, urging the media and the public to refrain from sensationalizing the group’s activities. He clarified that while the group is actively recruiting, the situation is under control, with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) closely monitoring the situation.

The General also addressed concerns about the group’s potential expansion into other states, stating that the threat to states like Kaduna and Niger is overstated. He reassured Nigerians that security agencies are working tirelessly, deploying advanced technology and joint operations to neutralize the threat and safeguard borders.

Laka’s remarks come amid growing concerns about the group’s activities, which some fear could evolve into a larger-scale insurgency similar to Boko Haram. However, the NCTC’s stance is clear: the *Lakurawa* group remains small and manageable.
