The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has barred former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa from traveling abroad, seizing his passport following his arrest over an alleged misappropriation of N1.3 trillion in derivation funds. The probe centers on the diversion of 13% of the federation account’s revenue between 2015 and 2023. Okowa has been accused of misusing funds, including a N40 billion investment in shares for an offshore LNG venture, and is facing allegations of failing to account for the diverted funds.
Okowa, who was arrested by EFCC officials on November 4, 2024, denied the charges, calling them politically motivated and laughable. He was released after meeting bail conditions, one of which required him to surrender his travel documents. Speaking on his release, Okowa expressed confidence in clearing his name, while also emphasizing his continued support for the current Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori.
