DSS Mediates Truce Between Ikeja Electric, NLC, Averts Looming Strike
The Department of State Services (DSS) stepped in yesterday to prevent a full-blown industrial strike after a tense standoff between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Lagos Council and Ikeja Electric (IE). The NLC had launched a protest at IE’s offices, accusing the utility company of violating workers’ rights, including poor working conditions and alleged victimization of staff.

In a swift intervention, the DSS facilitated a meeting between the two parties at its Magodo office, which resulted in a temporary suspension of the planned industrial action. The union’s Vice Chairman, Bisi Idowu, confirmed the suspension of the strike after a signed communiqué promised that IE would address the workers’ concerns. While IE has yet to respond publicly, it issued a brief notice to customers explaining the disruption caused by the protest and assured that normal operations would resume once the picketing ended.
