Bandits Seize Nigeria’s Largest Military Camp, 23 Communities Flee

The Niger State House of Assembly has raised alarm over bandits taking control of Nigeria’s largest military training camp, Nagwamase Cantonment, in Kontagora Local Government Area. The camp, which hosts the Nigerian Army’s artillery corps for training, has been overrun by non-state actors, displacing 23 nearby farming communities.

During a plenary, Abdullahi Isah, representing Kontagora II constituency, informed lawmakers that the bandits had set up eight camps within the military training ground. Since their occupation, attacks have intensified, forcing residents of both Kontagora and Mariga local councils to flee.

“The area, now a stronghold for bandits, poses a significant security threat,” Mr. Isah warned, adding that several people abducted in recent attacks remain in captivity.

The Assembly has urged the state government to urgently collaborate with military authorities to reclaim the camp and restore safety to the displaced communities.
