The Nigerian Correctional Service has recorded a slight reduction in the number of awaiting trial inmates across the country’s 244 correctional centres, according to PUNCH.

According to the latest data by NCoS, 56,973 of 84,337 inmates were awaiting trial, marking a decrease from the 57,288 inmates reported in August 2024.

The breakdown of the data showed that 55,604 of those awaiting trial were male, while 1,369 were female.

In comparison, August’s figures revealed 55,924 males and 1,364 females awaiting trial.

Meanwhile, 27,364 inmates, or 32 per cent of the total population, have been convicted, a slight increase from the 26,995 recorded in August.

This group includes 26,893 males and 471 females, compared to the previous count of 26,530 males and 465 females.

Despite the slight reduction in awaiting-trial inmates, the data highlighted the challenges within Nigeria’s criminal justice system, as awaiting-trial inmates still constituted the vast majority of the prison population.
