Ribadu: Illicit Arms Used by Terrorists Linked to Government Sources

National Security Adviser (NSA) Malam Nuhu Ribadu revealed that a significant number of illicit arms used by criminals in Nigeria originally belonged to the government. According to Ribadu, these weapons are often diverted to terrorists, bandits, and other non-state actors by corrupt security agents.

Speaking during an arms destruction exercise in Abuja, Ribadu condemned security personnel involved in the illicit arms trade, stating that anyone caught facilitating the transfer of weapons to terrorists would face severe consequences. He emphasized the need to end the proliferation of weapons that fuel violence, noting that many of these arms are sourced from both within Nigeria and abroad.

The exercise, organized by the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), involved the destruction of 2,400 obsolete and unserviceable illicit arms, underscoring the government’s commitment to curbing the illegal arms trade.

Ribadu also expressed confidence that the current leadership in Nigeria would overcome the country’s security challenges, calling for continued efforts to secure the nation and remove illegal weapons from circulation.
