Akpabio Dismisses Impeachment Rumours, Calls it ‘Fake News

A seemingly routine Senate session was interrupted on Wednesday by reports of an alleged plot to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other top officials. These claims, circulating on social media, suggested that operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) had surrounded the National Assembly to prevent the supposed impeachment.

Akpabio, who was presiding over the session, addressed the rumours, describing them as “fake news.” With a hint of surprise, he reassured senators, saying, “Distinguished colleagues, there is fake news circulating that the DSS have surrounded the premises because of a plan to impeach principal officers.”

Laughing off the accusations, Akpabio added, “I hear they use AI (Artificial Intelligence) to generate these stories just to drive traffic. They even pay people for it.”

As the chatter in the Senate grew, the question arose about which committee should investigate the matter. Akpabio, still chuckling, asked, “Which committee do we refer these fake news now?” Ultimately, the Senate agreed to refer the issue to the Committee on Special Duties for investigation, with a report due in the shortest possible time.

Meanwhile, a check by the Nigerian Tribune at the National Assembly revealed no unusual presence of DSS personnel, and the atmosphere in the Senate remained calm and undisturbed.
