Reps to Visit EFCC, Prison Over Bobrisky’s Corruption Allegations

The House of Representatives Committee investigating corruption claims against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) will visit the Lagos offices of both agencies on Monday, October 21, 2024. The investigation stems from allegations made by controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, through a recorded phone conversation shared by social media influencer Martins Otse (VeryDarkMan).

Bobrisky claims that he paid N15 million to officials to have money laundering charges dropped against him. The committee, led by Chairman Ginger Onwusibe, grilled EFCC and NCoS officials, as well as Otse, on October 1, 2024, over the allegations. Bobrisky, convicted in April 2024 for abusing the naira, was sentenced to six months in prison but was released in August 2024 amid allegations of receiving special treatment during his incarceration.

In response to the controversy, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, ordered an investigation and the suspension of two senior NCoS officers, Michael Anugwa and Sikiru Adekunle, for their roles at the Kirikiri prisons.

Otse presented an audio in which Bobrisky allegedly claimed that he never served time in prison but was kept in a private apartment with the help of his godfather, who allegedly facilitated the arrangement with a deputy controller. Bobrisky also suggested that he had made a N5 million payment to a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) to seek a government pardon for his money laundering charges.

Despite the serious allegations, both EFCC and NCoS officials denied any wrongdoing during the hearings. Otse initially caused a stir at the session, demanding that Bobrisky appear before the panel before he would answer questions. The situation was resolved after his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, and committee members assured him that Bobrisky would be invited to testify in public.

The committee’s visit to the agencies in Lagos is a crucial next step in their investigation. Chairman Onwusibe confirmed that after the visit, further hearings would be scheduled, and Bobrisky would be invited to provide his side of the story.
