Ex-AGF Nwabuoku’s N1.6bn Fraud Case Postponed for Plea Bargain Talks
The Federal High Court in Abuja has rescheduled the hearing of the N1.6 billion fraud case involving former acting Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Anamekwe Nwabuoku, and his co-defendant, Felix Nweke, to December 2, 2024. This extension is to enable both defendants and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to finalize a plea bargain arrangement.

The EFCC had initially filed an 11-count charge against Nwabuoku and Nweke, a former Deputy Director at the Ministry of Defence, accusing them of laundering N1.6 billion between 2019 and 2021 while Nwabuoku was Director of Finance and Accounts at the Ministry. During the scheduled July 10 arraignment, the defendants pleaded for more time to repay the alleged stolen funds, leading to the postponement of the hearing.
Nwabuoku was appointed acting AGF on May 20, 2022, by former President Muhammadu Buhari, following the suspension of Ahmed Idris over an N80 billion fraud scandal. However, Nwabuoku’s tenure was short-lived, as he was removed from office just weeks after his appointment in July 2022.
