Reps Consider Bill to Appoint Head of NASS Security from Internal Staff
The House of Representatives is deliberating a new bill that mandates the appointment of the National Assembly’s Sergeant-at-Arms from within its security department. The bill, sponsored by House Spokesman Hon. Akintunde Rotimi, aims to establish a Legislative Security Directorate, ensuring the head holds a rank equivalent to that of a Secretary in the National Assembly.
The proposed law would replace the current practice of appointing retired senior security personnel to the role, ensuring greater internal continuity and expertise. The bill was read for the first time on September 26, 2024.

The head of the Sergeant-at-Arms would serve a four-year term, renewable once, and must have at least 15 years of experience within the National Assembly.
The proposed bill also grants the Sergeant-at-Arms and directorate personnel similar powers and immunities to those of the Nigeria Police Force, and it outlines strict regulations on firearms within the complex.
