Zamfara Gov Accuses Defence Minister of Banditry Ties, Vows to Release Evidence

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has accused the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, of having ties to banditry in the state. Lawal disclosed that he has already reported Matawalle to National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and President Bola Tinubu, presenting evidence to support his claims.

This comes after Matawalle, a former Zamfara governor, publicly denied any connection with bandits and challenged both Governor Lawal and General Ali Gusau (retd.) to swear by the Holy Qur’an that they are not involved in banditry. Matawalle argued that engaging in dialogue with bandits during his tenure was part of efforts to bring peace to the state, similar to measures taken by other governors in the North-West.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Sulaiman Idris, Governor Lawal vowed to release concrete evidence linking Matawalle to banditry activities. He accused Matawalle of providing bandits with vehicles, money, and food supplies, adding that the National Security Adviser and the president are aware of these facts.

Idris emphasized that the governor has sworn by the Qur’an, praying for divine punishment upon anyone involved in the banditry crisis, and is prepared to make the evidence public in response to Matawalle’s call for a media trial.
