Kogi Assembly Calls for EFCC Chair’s Sack Amid Allegations, Sparks Criticism

The Kogi State House of Assembly has called for the immediate removal of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, accusing him of unprofessional conduct in handling the case of former Governor Yahaya Bello. The Assembly’s resolution came after allegations of an “unprovoked attack” on the Kogi Government Lodge by EFCC operatives, which the lawmakers described as an assassination attempt on both Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and Bello.

During the plenary session on Monday in Lokoja, Hon. Akus Lawal, representing Ankpa 1, raised a motion of urgent public importance, which was seconded by Hon. Jacob Olawunmi of Ijumu. The Assembly cited confrontations on April 17 and September 18, accusing the EFCC of exceeding its mandate by firing live rounds within a diplomatic zone.

However, this move by the Assembly has drawn sharp criticism from activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju, who condemned their actions. Adeyanju argued that the Assembly should focus on investigating the “massive looting” under Yahaya Bello’s administration rather than attacking the EFCC. He labeled the Assembly’s actions as “a dance of shame,” suggesting that it was an attempt to shield Bello from justice.

“The people of Kogi deserve answers, not theatrics,” Adeyanju said, urging the people to reflect on their leadership choices. He emphasized that the EFCC’s mission to fight corruption should not be obstructed, and attempts to protect corrupt individuals only undermine the fight for justice in Nigeria.
