Dangote: EFCC Raid Was a Deliberate Attempt to Embarrass Us no

The chairman of Dangote group, Aliko Dangote, has alleged that the raid on his Lagos Head Office by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in January was orchestrated to embarrass his company. The EFCC raid was part of a broader investigation into alleged preferential foreign exchange allocations granted to the Dangote Group and 51 other companies under the leadership of former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Speaking during an interview with Bloomberg, Dangote explained that EFCC operatives visited his office without speaking to anyone or making any arrests, describing the raid as nothing more than a show intended to cause embarrassment.

The probe relates to a massive $3.4 billion forex malpractice and money laundering case allegedly facilitated during the Buhari administration. Dangote Industries had previously refuted any involvement in the scandal back in November 2023.

Despite the ongoing investigation, Dangote insisted that his company’s operations remain “100 percent clean,” adding that the Dangote Group continues to be the highest tax-paying organization in Nigeria and contributes more in taxes than the banking sector.

In response to the EFCC’s inquiries, the Dangote Group had previously provided all the requested documentation related to forex allocations. Despite this, the anti-graft agency returned to raid the company’s premises, a move that Dangote officials found puzzling.

“We don’t know why they [EFCC officials] came to our office again when we had already submitted all the necessary documents,” a Dangote official stated, questioning the true motive behind the visit.
