Kanu’s Health Worsens as DSS Rejects Specialist Treatment Request
The health condition of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has reportedly deteriorated after Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS), denied requests to transfer him to Heartland Cardiovascular Consultants Limited for proper treatment.
Maxwell Opara, one of Kanu’s lawyers, disclosed this in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday. Opara stated, “I just came back from DSS, where I visited Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. His condition is not something to write home about.”

Opara explained that Kanu’s US-trained cardiologist had recommended a two-week monitoring at his clinic for focused treatment. However, the DSS rejected this request, insisting that it must be court-ordered.
A letter signed by Dr. Onye Godfrey Achilihu, Medical Director at Heartland Cardiovascular Consultants Limited, urged the DSS to bring Kanu in for necessary tests, but the DSS refused. Opara expressed frustration, questioning why Kanu is being denied adequate medical care, calling it a breach of basic human rights.
