Sowore Clarifies: NIS, Not DSS, Responsible for My Detention
Popular human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has revealed that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) briefly detained him and seized his passport upon his arrival in Nigeria on Sunday. In a post on X, Sowore described the incident as “reckless.”

Contrary to earlier reports, the Department of State Services (DSS look) denied any involvement in the arrest, with a source confirming that Sowore had previously been on their watchlist, but his name was removed. The DSS stated they were not responsible for his detention.
Sowore later shared a video of his supporters welcoming him at the airport, captioning it, “LAGOS Airport arrival after the reckless seizure of my passport and brief detention by the @nigimmigration. #NoGoingBack.”
