EFCC Arrests Five Chinese Nationals for Illegal Mining in Akwa Ibom

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) attached to the Uyo Zonal Command have arrested five Chinese nationals for suspected illegal mining at Ndito-Eka-Iba village in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale disclosed in a statement from Uyo, the state capital, on Sunday that the arrests followed an intelligence report. The suspects were apprehended at the mining site where they were allegedly extracting a mineral believed to be ilmenite, a titanium-iron oxide, on August 29 and September 10, 2024, by the commission’s Special Task Force.

The suspects — Zhon Qinping, Li Yi, Xie Bin, Chen Zhou, and Chen Zeng — will be charged in court upon the completion of investigations.

“Operatives of the Uyo Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested five suspected illegal Chinese miners at Ndito-Eka-Iba village in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

“The arrests were made by the Special Task Force on Illegal Mining following credible intelligence on the illegal activities of foreign mining companies within the Eket and Ibeno Local Government Areas,” the statement read.

The EFCC emphasized that the suspects were arrested for mining ilmenite without authorization, and further legal actions will be taken following the investigation.
