ICPC Chair in Court Over Kano LG Contract Investigation

Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN), Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), appeared before a Kano State High Court on Thursday. The case stems from a suit filed by the Association of Local Government Chairmen and 43 Local Government Caretaker Committees, challenging the ICPC’s investigation into contracts awarded by the local governments.

The applicants argue that the involvement of seven government agencies in a single investigation is unconstitutional, alleging it constitutes an abuse of court processes. Their counsel, Shamsu Jibrin, accused the ICPC of violating an interim court order that restrained further actions until a substantive hearing was concluded.

The ICPC Chairman, however, claimed that the applicants’ counsel misled the court to secure the order, maintaining that the Commission’s actions are legal. He pointed out that one Abdullahi Aliyu Dederi, caretaker chairman of Karaye LGA, was the subject of the investigation, not the 44 LGA chairmen who filed the suit.

The court is expected to reassess the case after it was remitted to Kano’s Chief Judge for reassignment to another judge for contempt proceedings.
