CPTA sympathizes with flood victims, calls for preventive measures
The Center for Peace, Transparency, and Accountability (CPTA) has sympathized with the victims of the flood disaster that has been ravaging some states across Nigeria, thus, calling for speedy intervention from the government and other relevant authorities.
The Executive Director of CPTA, Comrade Ogheneyero Onomuodeke disclosed this information in a statement issued to newsmen today in Abuja.
Comrade Ogheneyero described the unfortunate incidents as calamitous due to their severe impacts on the lives, properties and livelihoods of the affected communities.
“The CPTA extends its deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the victims and families affected by the flood disasters across various states in Nigeria. The widespread devastation caused by the flooding has resulted in the loss of lives, displacement of communities, destruction of properties, and disruption of livelihoods in states like Bauchi, Bayelsa, Enugu, Jigawa, Kano, Niger, Sokoto, Zamfara and Maiduguri among a host of others.
“As such, CPTA is deeply concerned by the recurring nature of these flood disasters, which are exacerbated by heavy rainfall, poor drainage systems, and inadequate disaster preparedness. It is essential that both the government and residents take proactive steps to mitigate the risks associated with flooding,” Comrade Ogheneyero said.
The Director has further lamented the recent flood that struck Maiduguri where several lives were lost, thereby calling for urgent intervention to address the escalating humanitarian crises.
He said: “Subsequently, CPTA noted with deep concern that flooding has continued to pose a significant threat across several states in Nigeria, with Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State being the latest and most affected area in Nigeria currently. The flood which was caused by a water surge from the Alau Dam, led to the loss of several lives, homes, and livelihoods, leaving many families in severe distress.
“At CPTA, we are deeply saddened by the pain and suffering this disaster has inflicted on the residents of affected communities. We stand in solidarity with all Nigerians including the people of Borno State during this challenging time and commend both the federal and state government’s immediate efforts to respond to the crisis.”

While decrying the situation, Comrade Ogheneyero emphasized that these disasters could have been averted if appropriate proactive measures were put in place by the authorities and residents.
According to him, leveraging on the Early Warning Signals being issued by government agencies may avert or reduce the intensity of the disasters in the case of occurrences.
“However, it is essential to recognize that these disasters are often preventable or can be significantly mitigated if proper measures are put in place. CPTA calls on the government, residents, and all relevant stakeholders to take proactive steps to avert the recurrence of such devastating incidents in Maiduguri and other flood-prone areas across Nigeria.
“We strongly urge the government and residents to adhere to the Early Warning Signals regularly issued by authorities such as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA). These agencies play a critical role in forecasting potential disasters, including floods, and their warnings should be taken seriously as part of a broader strategy to prevent loss of life and property,” the Director noted.
Furthermore, the CPTA calls on all levels of government, relevant authorities, local and international organizations, and well-meaning individuals to come to the aid of the victims of the flood disaster in Maiduguri and other states in Nigeria in order to cushion its effects.
“It is essential that swift and substantial support is provided to ameliorate their (victims) suffering and help them rebuild their lives. This should include emergency relief measures, such as the provision of shelter, food, clean water, and medical assistance, as well as longer-term strategies for rehabilitation and rebuilding communities.
“In addition, we appeal to the government to strengthen flood prevention and mitigation efforts by investing in infrastructure upgrades, proper urban planning, and environmental management practices that can help reduce the likelihood of such disasters in the future. Public awareness campaigns should also be intensified to educate communities on disaster preparedness and the importance of heeding early warnings.
“As a nation, we must prioritize the protection of our citizens from the dangers of natural disasters. CPTA remains committed to working with all stakeholders to promote transparency, accountability, and proactive measures that safeguard lives and properties across Nigeria.” He added.
