FLOODING: Disquiet in Maiduguri as Homes, Farms Destroyed, Alau Dam Floodwaters Surge

Residents of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, are on high alert as floods have submerged many homes following the alleged breakdown of the Alau Dam, which had been at full capacity for the past week.

In a statement early Tuesday, Usman Tar, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, issued a “Flooding Alert for River Bank Residents” and called for immediate evacuation.

Professor Tar said, “Due to the unusually high volume of water this year, we urge all residents living along the river bank to take immediate action to protect themselves and their properties. The Alau Dam water has breached another channel, currently destroying farms, and is heading toward the river bank.”

He also advised residents in affected areas to follow designated evacuation routes to ensure safe passage.
