NCC Partners EFCC, Police to Tackle Identity Theft
Identity theft has become a major challenge in Nigeria, worsened by the poorly regulated SIM card registration process, which has allowed criminals to exploit the system. These criminals often use SIM cards registered under false identities to facilitate illegal activities, including kidnapping and fraud.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been actively addressing this issue by implementing mandatory SIM card registration and linking each SIM to the National Identity Number (NIN). This initiative aims to reduce the chances of criminals using unregistered or fraudulently registered SIMs for illegal purposes.
In addition to the NIN-SIM linkage policy, the NCC is collaborating with law enforcement agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Police to track and apprehend individuals involved in identity theft and cybercrime.
Dr. Rueben Mouka, Director of Public Affairs at NCC, emphasized that the NIN-SIM linkage ensures that personal data is securely stored, reducing identity theft. He added that the NCC is also running an awareness campaign to educate Nigerians on how to protect their personal information and avoid falling victim to cybercrime.

The NCC is also working to strengthen cybersecurity through training and international collaboration. The commission announced September 14, 2024, as the final deadline for full compliance with the NIN-SIM linkage policy, warning that any SIM not linked with a NIN will be disconnected by mobile network operators.
The NCC stated that 96% of SIMs have already been linked to NINs, representing over 153 million SIMs. They urged Nigerians to complete their NIN-SIM linkage to enhance digital security, reduce fraud, and support the growth of the digital economy.
