EFCC Collaborates with UK Partners to Recover Stolen Funds

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has partnered with international experts in the United Kingdom to enhance efforts in tracing and recovering stolen funds. This collaboration was announced during the 41st International Symposium on Economic Crime at Jesus College, Cambridge, where EFCC officials joined global specialists.

Themed “Suspect Assets,” the symposium addressed critical issues related to asset tracing, recovery, and the challenges posed by economic crimes. Leading the Nigerian delegation, EFCC’s Secretary, Mohammed Hammajoda, emphasized the importance of this partnership in confronting threats posed by fraudsters and ensuring the recovery of illicit proceeds.

Dr. Umar Bello, Head of EFCC’s Strategic Intelligence Analysis Unit, highlighted key challenges such as third-party money laundering and concealment of beneficial ownership, stressing the need for effective case management and international collaboration.

Justice John Tosho, Chief Judge of the Federal High Court in Nigeria, shared the country’s successes in asset forfeiture and reaffirmed ongoing efforts to prevent fraudsters from retaining their illicit gains.

The symposium brought together a diverse group of participants, including academics, judges, lawyers, and law enforcement officials, to discuss various aspects of handling suspect wealth and enhancing global cooperation in economic crime prevention.
