8 Div. Commences Inter-Formations Combat Proficiency Competition in Sokoto
The 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto State on Monday commenced its 2024 Inter-Formations Combat Proficiency Competition, aimed at transforming service into a formidable and highly motivated force.
Brig-Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, the acting General Officer Commanding (GOC), declared the competition open in Sokoto.
“This competition reflects our commitment to achieving our constitutional responsibilities within a joint environment and ensuring our combat readiness to address the myriad of security challenges facing our nation,” the GOC said.
Ajose said that the competition was designed to sharpen the skills and competencies of middle and junior leadership within the division’s area of responsibility.
“The event is part of the Army Headquarters’ Training Directive for 2024, aimed at fostering esprit de corps, cooperation, and teamwork among our officers and soldiers,” he said.

The acting GOC, however, urged the participants to abide by the rule of engagement during the week-long competition.
He reminded them that the competition was an integral part of their training programme which hopes to enhance their competencies and professional performance in the field.
“Let there be no room for infighting or unhealthy rivalry. I encourage you to train hard now, so you can fight with ease later,” Ajose said.
Earlier, Brig.-Gen. Timothy Opurum, the Commander ,1 Brigade and Sector 1 Operation Hadarin Daji, said that the participants were drawn from all formations and units within the division; Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Katsina States.
“The competition will feature activities such as map reading, combat swimming, weapon handling, stripping and assembly of various weapons, range classification, a 10km combat run, and an obstacle competition,” he said.
Opurum also expressed gratitude to the acting GOC and Army Headquarters for granting the brigade the authority to host the competition.
