In Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, police officers have protested over unpaid salaries. The officers, part of the Concerned Police Inspectors in Nigeria (CPIN), held a peaceful demonstration to highlight that they have not received their salaries for the past 11 months.

The officers marched to the Correspondent Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to voice their concerns.

The leader of the group, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “Our motivation to fight crime has dropped because the police authorities have not taken care of our needs.”

More than 1,500 officers, promoted from Inspector II to Inspector I, participated in the protest. They come from various police units across the state.

The officers have asked Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to step in and ensure they receive their overdue salaries. They stressed that the payments are essential due to the difficult economic situation in the country.

They also sent their appeal to the Presidency, the National Assembly, and the Police Service Commission (PSC).

In their letter to the IGP, the officers stated: “We are over 1,500 personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Akwa Ibom Command, promoted from Inspector II to Inspector I effective September 10, 2023, with a signal dated March 21, 2024.”
