Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi

The Knight Of The Kano Emirate

By Usman Suleiman Sarki, PhD

On December 31, 1956, Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, also known as Sarkin Dawaki Babba of Kano, was born in the historic city of Kano. Throughout his life, his father, Alhaji Babba Dan Agundi, served Kano selflessly as the Sarkin Dawaki Maituta.

In Kano, he attended Gidan Makama Primary and St. Louis Primary Schools for his elementary schooling. After completing his secondary school at Government College, Kano (now known as Rumfa College), he continued his higher study at the renowned Kaduna Polytechnic.

Sarkin Dawaki Babba served the nation in a variety of capacities before he was appointed District Head in 1990. He served on the boards of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the Bank of Industry (BOI), the Dala Orthopaedic Hospital in Kano, and the Kano Rural Electrification Board. He has worked in the private sector as general manager for Nijam International Limited and Dan Agundi General Merchants. In 1990, the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji (Dr) Ado Bayero, appointed him Sarkin Dawaki Maituta and District Head of Gwarzo.
Alhaji Dan Agundi is currently the Sarkin Dawaki Babba of Kano a kingmaker in the Kano Emirate. He inherited the great qualities of his late father Alhaji Babba Dan Agundi, particularly the heart of compassion and the willingness to help others unconditionally.
As a well-connected and influential person, Sarkin Dawaki Babba has lifted and raised the status of many people from Kano and other States of the Federation without looking at their socio-economic and political background. He is indeed exploring that connectivity and influence to bring development to Kano State.
As a fearless personality, Sarkin Dawaki Babba single-handedly challenged the purported dethronment of His Highness the Emir of Kano Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero CFR, where he won the case he instituted against the Kano State Government and the State House of Assembly. He stood his ground while the state government made an appeal which is yet to be determined.
It is important to state that, having people of this caliber is a blessing to Kano and Nigeria at large. This is because of their capacity and willingness to ensure justice for all which serve as a hallmark for peaceful and harmonious coexistence among people.
At this juncture I want to use this medium to commend the effort of Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi (Sarkin Dawaki Babba) for standing resolute to protect the image, integrity and legitimacy of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as well as protecting the wishes and aspirations of the good people of Kano. This is indeed a patriotic effort worthy of emulation.
I want to assure my support and contributions to the course of this struggle and the future ones as they are all aimed at protecting the interest of the people.
Having courageous people like Sarkin Dawaki Babba is a rare opportunity to keep those intoxicated with the power to think deeply before doing anything to remain within the limits of the law.
