EFCC Convicts 59 Internet Fraudsters Across Three States, Seizes Assets
In a major crackdown on cybercrime, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully secured the conviction of 59 internet fraudsters across Osun, Oyo, and Ogun states. The convicted individuals were sentenced to various jail terms, with some offered the option of fines. The sentences were handed down by five State High Court Judges and a Federal High Court Judge.
The convicts faced charges of impersonation, cheating, possession of fraudulent documents, and obtaining money under false pretenses. All pleaded guilty, leading to swift conviction
-Osun State High Court: Justice M. Salisu sentenced two individuals, Temitayo and Olamide, to one year in prison or a fine of N1 million each. Several others received similar sentences, along with the forfeiture of vehicles and cash.

Oyo State High Court: Justice Ladiran Akintola handed down sentences ranging from six months’ imprisonment to community service, with fines as low as N20,000. Convicts like Onifade were also ordered to forfeit luxury vehicles to the government.
-Federal High Court, Ibadan: Justice U.E. Akpan sentenced Mayowa Victor to one year in prison or a fine of N500,000, and Ejisun Kehinde to six months in prison or a fine of N300,000.
The EFCC has been relentless in its efforts to combat internet fraud, commonly known as “Yahoo Yahoo,” which has become a significant issue in Nigeria. These convictions serve as a warning to others involved in cybercrime and underscore the legal consequences of such activities. The convicted fraudsters also forfeited various assets, including vehicles and cash, to the Federal Government as part of their sentences.
