National Protest: KCSF Urges Government to Address Economic Hardships, Cautions Public Against Violence
In light of the looming nationwide protests, the Kano Civil Society Forum (KCSF) has called on the governments across all levels to work relentlessly in addressing the current economic hardships bedeviling the nation.
This is coming as the Forum also tasked the citizens to remain law-abiding and shun away all forms of activities capable of plunging the country into state of chaos and violence.
The President of KCSF, Mohammed Bello disclosed this in a statement he made available to newsmen today in Kano.
He noted that amidst increased tension due to planned national protests, the Forum deemed it imperative to establish a consultative committee saddled with the responsibility of engaging with stakeholders in order to find a common ground on the said volatile issues of protests and economic hardships.
According to him, the report submitted by the consultative committee showed that majority of the stakeholders emphasized on the rights to protest, but that should be done in a peaceful manner without undermining the peace and security of the society.
The committee expressed concerns that Kano is currently experiencing a difficult moment due to increased tension emanating from ongoing Emirate tussle and divergent views among different political factions in the State.
Therefore, any form of demonstration like protests must be treated carefully and handled with caution, thus, advising the protesters to work collaboratively with security agencies in order to achieve a meaningful cause.
The report also outlined several measures and initiatives through which government and related authorities can leverage in order to ameliorates sufferings of the masses.

“The Kano Civil Society Forum (KCSF) brings forth to the general public the findings and recommendations of its Consultative Committee, which was established in response to the planned national protest scheduled for August 1, 2024.
“The committee engaged with various stakeholders, including state and non-state actors, to gather insights and offer strategies to best address the concerns – planned protests and the economic hardships faced by the people of Kano State and Nigeria.
“The committee’s report underscored the importance of balancing the right to peaceful protest with the need to maintain public order and ensure the safety of all citizens.

“The report acknowledges that while the right to protest is a fundamental constitutional right, the fragile and volatile nature of Kano State necessitates a cautious approach. The committee emphasizes the potential risks of violence and unrest, the impact on vulnerable populations, and the complex political landscape that could exacerbate tensions.
“To address these concerns, the committee recommends that potential protesters liaise closely with security agencies for guidance and protection. The report also highlights the need for stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and peaceful means of addressing grievances to foster stability and promote the well-being of all citizens in the state.
“In addition to addressing the planned protest, the report outlines several measures to alleviate the economic hardships faced by the people of Kano State and Nigeria. These recommendations include the Reinstatement of Fuel Subsidies, Tax Relief for Low-Income Individuals and Small Businesses, Investment in Critical Infrastructure, Enhanced Access to Quality Social Services, Job Creation Initiatives for Youth and Women, Support for Local Businesses through Grants, Loans, and Training Programs, Combating Corruption and Ensuring Transparency in Government Spending, Increased Community Engagement in Decision-Making Processes, Strengthening Agricultural Support and, Establishing Emergency Assistance Programs for the Most Vulnerable.
“The committee emphasizes that these measures reflect a comprehensive and inclusive approach to addressing the economic challenges faced by the people of Kano State and Nigeria. By prioritizing the well-being of citizens and promoting sustainable economic growth, the committee believes these recommendations can mitigate the factors driving the planned national protests and foster a more stable and prosperous environment for all.
“While we admit the right to peaceful protest, we urge the public to refrain from any acts of violence. The political climate in Kano is currently fraught with tensions among various interest groups, including disputes within the emirate council and between political factions, and increasing criminality. Any opportunity for conflict, such as the upcoming national protest, could result in unintended and serious consequences.
“Therefore, the Kano Civil Society Forum (KCSF) appeals to all citizens to uphold peace and order during this time. We also call on the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with the protesting groups to address their concerns and develop lasting solutions to the pressing economic challenges.
“The KCSF remains dedicated to advocating for the rights and welfare of citizens while promoting peaceful and lawful avenues for expressing dissent.
“Together, we can navigate these challenging times and strive for a more prosperous and equitable Nigeria.”
