The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Area Command, has urged Nigerians to stop using second-hand tyres, commonly known as ‘tokunbo tyres,’ to help reduce the frequent road crashes in the country.
The command’s comptroller, James Ojo, made this appeal while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Ota, Ogun State.
Ojo emphasized that the use of these tyres is a significant factor contributing to road accidents in Ogun State and across Nigeria.
He advised the public to purchase new tyres instead of used ones, as new tyres are more durable and safer for highway travel.
“Though everyone understands the current economic situation in the country, it is essential for people to prioritize safety to avoid unnecessary loss of life,” Ojo said.

“These pneumatic tyres, popularly known as tokunbo tyres, are deemed unsuitable for our highways because a significant number of them have exceeded their recommended lifespan from their manufacturing dates.
“Any usage beyond this duration can pose a significant risk to motorists and jeopardize their lives,” he added.
The comptroller reiterated the NCS’s commitment to protecting the local economy, ensuring road safety, and upholding the integrity of the nation’s borders.
