HURIWA Hails NYSC for Prioritizing Corps Members’ Security
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has praised the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Federal Government for their efforts in ensuring the safety and security of corps members. The NYSC has partnered with the military, Department of State Services, and police to provide foolproof security for corps members, while the Federal Executive Council has excluded hotspots and flashpoints of terrorism from areas where corps members are deployed.

HURIWA commended the NYSC management for taking measures to ensure the safety and well-being of corps members, which is critical to the scheme’s continuous relevance. The group also applauded the Federal Government’s decision to stop posting corps members to dangerous and terrorist-infested areas, citing the Minister of Youths’ announcement in February.
The Sokoto State Coordinator of NYSC, Alhaji Usman Yakubu Yaro, had earlier disclosed that the service is working with security agencies to guarantee the safety of corps members deployed to the state for the 2024 Batch ‘B’ stream 1 orientation exercise. The scheme has also implemented measures such as group transportation strategies and a comprehensive review of the remuneration structure to ensure corps members’ safety and prepare them for the job market.
HURIWA expressed optimism that security and stability would be restored nationwide, allowing for the fuller enjoyment of the services rendered by trained young graduates serving their fatherland through the NYSC scheme.
