EFCC Launches Zero Tolerance Club in Crescent University
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, May 22, 2023, inaugurated a Zero Tolerance Club at the Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State, in furtherance of its sensitization campaigns against corrupt practices.
Speaking at the event to mark the National Association of Political Science Students (NAPSS) Week ‘24, the acting Director of the Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC, Micheal T. Wetkas, urged the students to always resist any temptation to go into cybercrimes.
In his presentation titled “Fight Against Cybercrimes: The Youth as Critical Stakeholders”, Wetkas highlighted some of the consequences of criminality in order to re-direct the minds of those who might be on the verge of going into internet fraud.
He said: “At the moment, cybercrimes are performed by people of all ages, ranging from young to old. But, in most instances, the young make up an overwhelming chunk of the percentage.
“It is a trend that is gradually growing, as the internet continues to penetrate every sector of our lives and society in general; and no one can predict where it will lead us in the future.

Continuing, he added that “cybercrime has taken a toll on the image of the continent, as the number of African youths engaging in it is doubling at an alarming rate. These youths, buoyed by the successes of their foreign counterparts, often look for a way to get rich quick; they sometimes even delve into occultism in a bid to get foreigners to fall for their fraudulent antics.
“Our take home today is simple: shun cybercrime and all its alluring temptations. Crimes may yield a temporary respite, but it promises regrets and gnashing of teeth in the end. Let us become change agents. Let people see us as disciplined role models. Being good children to our parents, listening to their advice and that of elders should be our watchword.”
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ibrahim Gbajabiamila, eulogised the giant strides of the EFCC and affirmed that the inauguration of the club “fits in perfectly into the mission of the University and vision of its founder, the late Justice Bola Ajibola.”
Gbajabiamila, who used the opportunity to highlight some of the lofty achievements of the University as well as its outstanding performance in breeding graduates with impeccable character, expressed gratitude to the EFCC for integrating the students as ambassadors in the fight against corruption.
Before administering the oath of service to the students, WetKas charged them to uphold the core values of the Club, which are integrity, honesty, discipline, responsibility and patriotism.
A total of 109 students took the oath of service alongside the executives of the Zero Tolerance Club.
The Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. R.O. Kareem, in his vote of thanks, applauded the EFCC for the inauguration while assuring the University’s full support for the Club. He added that the University had already institutionalized integrity as a virtue in the activities of all the student associations in the school.
