EFCC Denies Release of Alleged List of 58 Ex-Governors Accused of Corruption
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted claims circulating in the media suggesting the release of a list containing 58 former governors under investigation for corruption amounting to N2.18 trillion. In a press statement issued on Sunday, the EFCC clarified that it has not disclosed any such list nor engaged in discussions regarding the investigation of these former governors with any media outlet.
According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the report titled ‘EFCC Releases Full List of 58 Ex-Governors that Embezzled N2.187 Trillion’ was deemed “false and mischievous.” Oyewale emphasized that the commission has not authorized such a list and labeled it as a deceptive fabrication aimed at undisclosed motives.

Oyewale urged the public to disregard the circulated report and advised the media to verify information directly with the EFCC to prevent the dissemination of false information. The EFCC reiterated its commitment to investigating corruption cases impartially.
Additionally, the EFCC addressed a recent petition concerning an alleged N70 billion corruption case involving Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle. Wilson Uwajuren, acting Director of Public Affairs for the EFCC, stated the commission’s willingness to consider the fresh petition, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to tackle corruption.
Previously, on May 18, 2023, the EFCC announced its investigation into corruption allegations against Matawalle, including the award of fictitious contracts and diversion of funds totaling over N70 billion during his tenure as Zamfara State governor from 2019 to 2023.
