Kano Youth Promotion Council Knocks Bode George Over Comment on Kano Population
A Kano-based non-profit organisation, Kano Youth Promotion Council (KYPC), has described the comments made by the chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Bode George, on Kano State regarding its population as’misleading’ and one that lacks substance.
The condemnation was disclosed in a statement signed and made available to newsmen in Kano by the president of the group, Comrade Idris Ibrahim Unguwar Gini, on Thursday evening.
The group noted that Mr. George, who is also the former military governor of old Ondo State, claimed in an interview with Arise TV that, in spite of having a smaller population than Lagos, Kano State has however accumulated more local government areas, or LGAs, than the former capital city of Nigeria.

While refuting the claim, KYPC noted that information available from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) portal indicated that the projected population of Kano State in 2023 is higher than that of its counterpart, Lagos State.
“According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, as of 2023, Kano State has a population of 16,253,549, while Lagos State has 15,772,884 residents, and this data contradicts Mr. George’s claim that Kano has a smaller population than Lagos,” Comrade Unguwar Gini said.
He also added that the 2006 Population Census reported that Kano State has a population of 9,401,286 people, while Lagos State has 9,113,605 residents, which further highlighted ‘errors’ in Mr. George’s statement.
Regarding the issue of local governments receiving funds from the federation account, Comrade Unguwar Gini said, “This is a constitutional matter that cannot be influenced by an individual.”
Meanwhile, the group urges Mr. George and others to always verify their facts before issuing public announcements so as to avoid misleading the citizens.
