PeacePro calls on government to probe NGO’s alleged support for terrorism in IDP camps

A peacebuilding think tank, PeacePro, has called on the Nigerian government to investigate allegations that a non-governmental organization (NGO) is sponsoring terrorism by recruiting individuals to burn down Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the North East region of the country. The group expressed concern over reports of fire outbreaks in IDP camps and a viral video showing a suspect admitting to arson and alleging that NGOs paid him to commit the acts. PeacePro believes the federal government should put all international humanitarian NGOs operating in the country under close surveillance to establish the truth of the matter.

They argue that the allegations are alarming and should be treated seriously, as NGOs are supposed to be aid workers, not terrorist suspects.

In a statement by the Executive Director of PeacePro, Mr Abdulrazaq Hamzat, the group called for a more proactive response to the development by the federal government.

Hamzat maintained that, the indictment of NGOs as contained in the statement of Borno State government is enough to declare a state of emergency on the operations of all humanitarian NGOs in the North East to truly ascertain what is happening because NGOs are supposed to be aid workers not terrorist suspects.
