Mighty Jets Lose Another Legend, Coach Lawandi Datti

One of the last few surviving players of the famous Mighty Jets Football Club of Jos, coach Lawandi Datti is dead.

Lawandi died yesterday just two weeks after the death of his wife according to a source close to the family.

“The loss of the coach is gradually bringing to a closure the lives of the jets players of that golden era of 1972, which started with the death of Sam Garba Okoye in 1978. Since then, Layiola Olagbemiro, Sule Kekere, UBA Junior, Isma’ila Mabo, and Batande Alli have all followed.

“May Allah forgive all of them. Family sources say that the late coach Lawandi, who is the biological father of the sitting commissioner for sports in plateau state, was buried after asr prayers, in Jos yesterday,” the source said.

It will be noted that Mighty Jets was the first Nigerian league champions in 1972.
