Senator Mustapha Seeks Multi-Pronged Approach to Tackle Drug Abuse
Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central in the National Assembly, has outlined a multifaceted strategy to combat the growing menace of drug abuse in his state.
Senator Mustapha disclosed this recently while delivering speech at the book launch on drug abuse authored by the Kwara State NDLEA commander, Alh Basheer Muhammed, in Ilorin Kwara state.
Mustapha who was represented by his Special Technical Adviser on Skill Development, Job Creation and Entrepreneurship, Mal. Nasir Abdulquadri emphasized the importance of education, skill development, entrepreneurship, and community support in tackling this critical issue.
He advocates for partnerships with educational institutions to improve infrastructure, educator training, and the overall learning environment.
“We have championed several skill development initiatives to make Kwara’s youth less susceptible to the allure of substance abuse, implementing programs that provide financial assistance, training, and mentorship to empower these groups and reduce their vulnerability to drug abuse.

“We have invested in programs through youth development associations and other platforms to provide avenues for artistic expression, cultural activities, talent management, and sports. These initiatives aim to redirect youthful energy towards positive endeavors and foster a sense of community belonging.
He further believes in fostering an entrepreneurial mindset, providing mentorship, workshops, and financial resources to empower youths to build sustainable and drug-free futures.
While leveraging his position as the Senate Committee Chair on Agricultural Products and Rural Development, Mustapha noted that creating employment opportunities and improving economic conditions in rural communities can address the socio-economic factors that contribute to drug abuse.
The Senator lauds the contributions of various stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse, the NDLEA, the State Drug Abuse Committee, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and the Kwara State Government for their dedication, collaboration, and strategic policies in tackling this complex issue.
“We believe that this multifaceted strategy, which encompasses human capital development, skill development, entrepreneurship promotion, support for vulnerable groups, and legislative interventions in agriculture, will pave the way for a resilient and drug-free Kwara State,” he explained.
He calls for collective action to build a future where youths can thrive, free from the shackles of drug abuse.
