Sunday Igboho Freed In Benin Republic, Departs For Germany

Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho has regained his full freedom in the neighboring Benin Republic, no more restricted by his bail condition.
Prof. Banji Akintoye, leader of Yoruba Nation group, said Igboho was freed on Sunday and has left for Germany to join his family.

Igboho was arrested in July 2021, while he was about to board a flight to Germany, weeks after he survived a deadly assault by security agents in his Ibadan home.

The DSS later declared him wanted.

However, Igboho sneaked out of the country, with plans to join his family in Germany.

In an interview with Nigerian Tribune, Igboho, said he is now free to leave Benin.

“I am now free to return to Nigeria and visit any country in the world. I have fulfilled all the legal conditions attached to my bail few years back and I am coming home to Nigeria, my country of origin, any moment from now.

“I can confirm to you that I am now free to come back to Nigeria. There is no legal encumbrance again. Even though I have been living in Cotonou for some time, I can confirm to you categorically that I have now secured the liberty to leave Cotonou for Nigeria.”

Igboho was arrested, along with his wife on July 20, 2021, in Cotonou, while trying to travel to Germany at Cardinal Bernardin International Airport.

After some legal battles, he was granted bail instead of being repatriated to Nigeria.

The bail condition effectively kept him in Cotonou, Benin.

In a video released on Facebook, Igboho thanked all those who had supported him during his travail and detention in Benin.

He specifically mentioned Yoruba monarchs, activists such as Professor Banji Akintoye and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, for their support while he stayed in Cotonou.
