NGO Empowers 50 Borno Primary Teachers for Girl Child Mentorship

By Nafisat Bello

Girl Child Concerns, GCC, and the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, have collaboratively trained female teachers of 50 primary schools in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The training was completed today at Babagana Wakil Integrated Higher Islamic.

GCC’s Program Lead, Ummulkhairi Usman said that the training was for one hundred teachers who were meritoriously selected from fifty schools of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, MMC, and Jere Local Government Area for the Girls for Girls Project initiated by the organization with the support of Unicef and Education Cannot Wait, adding that the trained teachers would serve as mentors in their various schools.

She explained that girls aged 10-12 that were trained in life skills in school likely add value to themselves and their societies more than those who were not trained.

“The G4G project is a timely project considering social and economic realities in the country. We, as teachers, must equip girls with life skills and knowledge so they can become useful for themselves and everyone.

“They would be exposed to communication, basic health tips, the difference between needs and wants, collaboration, negotiation, resilience, among other strategic important topics.”

She concluded that the impact of the project would be felt by everyone in Borno State and beyond by the time the beneficiaries were trained and equipped with the necessary skills they needed to realize their full potential.
