One person has been reportedly killed and property destroyed by hoodlums in some suburbs of Makurdi in Benue State.

A source told our reporter that what started as a disagreement between two young people, a male and female, on Thursday spread to the Modern Market area, causing traders and residents to close their shops and flee their homes respectively.

A witness told our correspondent that the trouble began on Wednesday evening after a young man raped a girl who had earlier refused his advances.
He said, “The girl reported the incident to her family members, and when her brother went to confront the suspect, it snowballed into a fight.
“Before long, hoodlums hijacked the matter, and in the process one person was killed. Houses have been burnt, animals killed and people’s property destroyed.”
Police spokesperson in the state, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed that one person was killed and only one house was burnt, adding that peace has returned to the area.
