Nigerian Army Should Do Better

By Ejike E OKPA

Nigerian Army (NA) – the largest military force in Africa if not west Africa, is a lousy giant all things considered – just like chanting Nigeria is ,”Giant of Africa”.

Isn’t that something?

Since the advent of home grown terrorists took root in the country coming on 10 years, the Army has not been able to deal decisive blow on Boko Haram (BK).

Decorated Generals after Generals including President Buhari, a retired General, seems to be lacking and lagging on what will nail the internal ragtag terrorists.

In the face of such insecurities, officers are constantly promoted and top brass receive commendations and their portraits done as if they just won major conflicts. No surprise there as Nigerians crave titles.

When a military is deployed to fights its own country as is the case with Nigeria, it tells more than meets the eyes.

The military is typically used to defend its sovereignty against outside aggression. In Nigeria, the reverse is the case – it is fighting itself and Nigerians if asked will say they are not confident in what is going on.

Fighting BK has been the longest military engagement NA has ever done and the scorecard is not pretty.

Just imagine if Nigeria is exposed to aggression by outside force, with resources unduly committed to internal war, what is the likelihood they can defend Nigeria?

It is sad no sector of Nigeria, is an example of excellence even though it is a land of “Your Excellencies where nothing is hardly Excellent”.

Hail Thee Nation where Hell Rages – just chew on that.
