Amusan, Others Get National Honour as Buhari Showers N200m on Nigerian Athletes
President Muhammadu Buhari has rewarded the Team Nigeria Contingents to the Common Wealth Games (CWG) that took place in Birmingham, United Kingdom and World Athletic Championship in Oregon, USA, the sum of N200 million naira for their remarkable performances.
In addition, some individual team members who performed excellently in the two tournaments were also conferred with National Award Honours.
Buhari made this known today at the Presidential reception in honour of the team members and their coaching crews which was held at the State House, Villa, Abuja.
While expressing his happiness, Buhari eulogized Team Nigeria Contingents, describing them as “Our Dear National Heroes” due to their record breaking ground for winning the first-ever gold medals for Nigeria.
“Your diligence, hard work and excellent performances are in line with the Nigerian Sport Policy. Your remarkable displays across the two tournaments have led to the raising of Nigeria’s flag and singing her National Anthem.
“You brought an honour to our dear nation, thus, on behalf of the country and the citizens, I say thank you.
“Tobi Amusan, thank you for registering Nigeria’s name in the global gold medal inventory as well as in the entire world record of sports in general,” Buhari said.

The winning team were then advised by President Buhari to always keep their hopes alive and keep on striving in expanding their sports skills.
Mr. Buhari also commended the Federal Minister of Youth and Sports Development (FMYSD), Chief Akin Sunday Dare for his vital roles towards the successes being recorded in the sport industry for the past years.
In her remark, the Federal Minister for Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen noted that, the sterling performances of Team Nigeria has revived the hope of the country in the global sporting arena, adding that, the future of Nigeria now lies in the hands of these indomitable iconic sports men and women.
While reacting, Chief Dare commended the team for the highest level of discipline and patriotism demonstrated throughout the entire tournament which is crucial to the landmark victories that have been recorded.
He dedicated all the victories to President Buhari for his unceasing intervention to the sports sector whenever such need arises without foot dragging.
In his part, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, felicitates with the Contingents and advises them to continue being worthy ambassadors and role models for the teaming Nigeria’s youth by always keeping the flag flying.
Dignitaries that graced the event included Federal Minister of FCT, Mohammed Musa Bello, Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, Senate President, Ahmed Lawal, Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, Permanent Secretary of FMYSD, Ismaila Abubakar, Special Assistant to the President on Publicity, Femi Adesina and host of others.
