IPOB disowns kidnappers, DSS frees Kanu’s foster mother
The Indigenous People of Biafra has warned those claiming to be fighting for the actualisation of Biafra and praying for the peaceful return of the group’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to eschew kidnappings for ransom and other forms of criminalities in the South-East.
While noting that kidnapping for ransom and other heinous crimes were not part of the tradition practised by the zone’s ancestors, the group warned that it was a sacrilege to be part of such ugly trend in the land.
The group’s Director of Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful, stated this in a statement made available to journalists on Sunday.
IPOB said it initiated the Monday sit-at-home order in the zone but had since suspended it, saying its continuation was against the people and should be condemned in its entirety.
The statement read in part, “We, the global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra ably led by the great leader, Nnamdi Kanu, wish to condemn the numerous kidnappings and killings going on at Nnewi Local Government Area and other parts of Biafraland by criminals as the Igbo tradition goes against Ndigbo wasting innocent Igbo lives.

“It is a sacrilege to be part of such heinous crime against our own people. If our ancestors acted in such a way to themselves, we wouldn’t have been able to see today.

“We are cautioning those claiming to kidnap because of non-compliance and non-existent Monday sit-at-home order to stop. If you are fighting for Biafra freedom and wish that Kanu should be released from the Department of State Services’ dungeon, you must stop all forms of criminalities in Biafraland. However, if you are enjoying spilling the blood of a fellow innocent Biafran, bear in mind that you will be rewarded in the same way.”
It further condemned the spate of kidnappings going on in Nnewi, Anambra State, adding that the ugly trend had led to the unnecessary killings of innocent citizens who could not provide the ransom for their release.
“Anybody still enforcing non-existent Monday sit-at-home is a criminal who wants to impersonate and blackmail IPOB. So long as IPOB is concerned, Monday sit-at-home initiated by DOS has been cancelled and has not been reinstated. IPOB doesn’t force or intimidate anyone when we call our people to sit-at-home as part of our civil disobedience, especially on our leader’s court date,” it added.
Meanwhile, Ukamaka Ejezie, popularly called Mama Biafra, who is said to be the foster mother of Kanu, on Sunday got her freedom from the custody of security agencies after several weeks in detention.
The leader of Kanu’s legal team, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, confirmed her release in a short statement obtained by The PUNCH.

He said, “I am very delighted to inform you all that Ejezie (Mama Biafra) has regained her freedom. She is now out of the DSS dungeon. We thank Chukwuokike Abiama for this huge success.
“We are not relenting; every prisoner of conscience, including our indefatigable client, Kanu, will soon regain their freedom.
“We in the legal team are doing everything legally permissible to make it happen, we are not resting on our oars at all, be assured.”
Mama Biafra, a septuagenarian, was arrested during Kanu’s last court appearance in Abuja on May 18.
