Gunmen attack school in Nasarawa, kill teacher

A teacher at the Government Science Secondary School, Nasarawa Eggon, the headquarters of Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of the state, Auta Nasela, has been reportedly killed  by some gunmen.

Daily Trust learnt that the incident happened on Saturday night at about  8:45pm when the gunmen invaded the school premises and went to the residence of the deceased, demanding money.

Our correspondent further learnt that during the attack, the deceased escaped to his neighbour’s apartment, where he was shot several times by one of the gunmen.

It was gathered that another staff member of the school, Mr Timothy Malle, was also shot and receiving treatment at an undisclosed government hospital in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Nasarawa State command, DSP Ramhan Nansel, who confirmed the incident in Lafia to our correspondent, stated that the incident was a case of armed robbery.

He said, “A distress call was received from GSS Nasarawa Eggon, that some unidentified hoodlums invaded the residence of one Auta Nasela. When they gained entrance, they started demanding money but the man escaped to his neighbour’s house.

“Unfortunately, one of the hoodlums followed him and shot him. He was rushed to the General Hospital in Nasarawa Eggon by the police but he later died while receiving treatment.”

He added, “Based on available information, only the late Mr Auta was killed, not two teachers as members of the public have been saying.”

According to him, the Commissioner of Police, Adesina Soyemi, had directed that a thorough investigation should be conducted on the matter with a view to arresting and bringing the perpetrators to book.

Recall that Governor Abdullahi Sule in July, ordered the closure of all primary and secondary schools in the state following several security threats in the Federal Capital Territory, which shares proximity with the state.

Consequently, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) raised the alarm over alleged recruitment of child soldiers by bandits in Nasarawa State.
