Imo INEC official killed, two others missing
An official of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Nwokorie Anthony, was shot dead yesterday by gunmen during the ongoing continuous Voters Registration exercise at Nkwo Ihitte PU004 in Amakohia ward (RA02) in Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State.
This was disclosed by the Imo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Emeka Ezeonu in a statement signed by National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye.

He said the commission has suspended the exercise in the area, adding that the state office “is making efforts to locate the whereabouts of the two remaining staff involved in the registration exercise.
“Prior to the incident, the commission had suspended the CVR in Our and Njaba LGAs of the state on account of insecurity while the exercise is taking place only at the INEC LGA office in Oru East, Oru West, Orlu and Ohaji-Egbema.”
He enjoined the president General of various communities in the state as well as all stakeholders to protect staff of the commission engaged in national assignment.
“The safety and security of staff is of paramount importance to the commission,” he added.
