At Workshop, Experts Identify Sports as Tool for National Development
Experts have identified sports as a means to foster national development, urging Nigerians to promote it.
Mr. Austin Balewa, a senior officer at the department of sports, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development made the call during a one-day National Press/Communication Action Plan Development Workshop organized by the ministry for sports journalists and correspondents in Abuja.
According to Balewa, Nigeria is yet to optimize its full potentials in the area of sport despite the abundance of human and material resources possessed by the country. He blamed several factors such as the policy on sports, political will, economic challenges among others responsible for this state of affairs.
He said other nations of the world have utilized the potentials in sports to drive their socio-economic growth.
Another staff of the Youth and Sport Ministry, Mr. Ida Isah, said their ministry has so far introduced about twenty-seven programs aimed at boosting youth development and capacity in the country.
He urged journalists to sensitize the public on how to access and benefits from these initiatives.
In his remark, Mallam Yushau Shuaib, Editor-in-Chief of PRNigeria and Economic Confidential Magazine enjoyed journalists to contribute their quota in societal development through creating awareness, shaping public opinion, influencing decision and being part of policy making among others.
